Safari Overview

The Tsavo Express Safari is a full-day wildlife experience from Diani Beach or the Kenya Coast, designed for travelers with limited time. Beginning with an early-morning pickup, the safari takes you to Tsavo East National Park, one of Kenya’s oldest and most famous parks. You will enjoy morning and afternoon game drives, with a lodge lunch and short rest between activities, before returning to your hotel or residence in the evening.

The safari offers a convenient opportunity to experience Tsavo’s expansive landscapes and wildlife without requiring an overnight stay. Transportation, park fees, lunch, bottled water, and shared game drives are included.

Safari Itinerary

4:30–5:00 a.m. – Pickup from Diani or Mombasa

Your driver-guide will collect you from your hotel, residence, or agreed meeting point. A pickup around 4:30 a.m. may be preferable for some Diani properties, while a 5:00 a.m. departure may be suitable for other locations. An early start helps maximize time inside the park and reduces the effect of coastal traffic.

Guests should be ready with comfortable clothing, sun protection, binoculars or a camera, and any breakfast items they may need during the transfer. A short stop for refreshments may be possible, but breakfast is not necessarily included unless specifically arranged.

Approximately 7:00 a.m. – Arrival and park entry

After the drive from the coast, you will enter Tsavo East through the appropriate gate, commonly the Bachuma Gate for coastal itineraries. Kenya Wildlife Service lists Bachuma Gate as approximately 110 kilometres from Mombasa and notes that park gates generally operate from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Once entry formalities are completed, the game drive begins. Your guide will select the best route based on recent wildlife reports, water availability, road conditions, and the time remaining in the park.

7:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. – Morning game drive

The morning drive will explore Tsavo East’s southern game-viewing areas. The park’s open plains, bushland, seasonal water sources, and riverine habitats provide opportunities to search for elephants, lions, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, impalas, warthogs, baboons, antelopes, and many other species.

Tsavo’s elephants are especially distinctive because their skin often appears red after they cover themselves with the park’s iron-rich soil. You may also encounter the park’s characteristic maneless lions, although wildlife sightings are never guaranteed and depend on the season, weather, and animal movements.

Your guide may include viewpoints or water areas such as Aruba Dam when these fit the day’s route. Other attractions, including Mudanda Rock, may require additional driving and are therefore subject to the selected entry gate, available time, and park conditions.

12:30 p.m. – Lunch inside or near the park

Stop for lunch at a lodge or designated safari restaurant. This provides time to rest, enjoy a meal, and escape the midday heat. Lunch arrangements may be buffet-style or set-menu, depending on the selected lodge and safari package.

1:30 p.m. – Short rest and preparation for the afternoon drive

After lunch, take a brief break before returning to the vehicle. The guide will review the return route and determine whether there is time for additional wildlife viewing before the park’s closing time.

2:00–5:30 p.m. – Afternoon game drive and exit

Resume the game drive while gradually making your way toward the exit gate. Afternoon sightings may include elephants returning to water, giraffes and zebras crossing the plains, buffaloes moving through the bush, or predators becoming active as the temperature falls.

The drive should be planned to reach the gate before the official closing time. The exact duration of this final game-viewing section will depend on the distance from the chosen area to the exit and on road and wildlife conditions.

Approximately 6:30 p.m. – Return to Diani or Mombasa

After leaving the park, begin the return transfer to the coast. Arrival time will vary according to the final drop-off location, traffic. Guests staying in Diani, Tiwi, Galu, or other South Coast areas should allow for possible variations in the evening transfer time.
